Hurricane Ike Evacuees Worship Together 9/21

This morning in Austin, Houston, and Texas City, Hurricane Ike evacuees from Galveston's Trinity and Grace Episcopal Churches found one another and worshipped together.  St. Matthew's, Austin, Christ Church Cathedral, Houston, and St. George's, Texas City embraced our evacuees.  As Episcopalians, we are never more united than when we worship together.  At times like this, we better understand what it means to be in communion.

We are grateful to these and other congregations who ministered to us and shared in the hearing of the Word and in the Body and Blood of Christ with us.

    Although I was the lone evacuee I think, I worshipped joyfully with the folks at St. Stephen’s in Huntsville today. They had just had their power restored, and were appropriately grateful, while being mindful of those of us with greater burdens to bear.
    Corrections and updates regarding the whereabouts of St. Augustine of Hippo parishioners. Audrey and her family are in Austin, not San Antonio, and Angela Lemons remains on the island in Galveston. Bill saw her yesterday and she says she is fine despite big trees in her yard and the deprivations that go along with living there there days. We heard from Emily Milburn and family, as well as Liz Mack and they are all safe and well off the island.
    Bill hopes Church Insurance crews will begin cleanup work in our parish halls and classrooms tomorrow or Tuesday.
    News from the William Temple Center is that there was little damage and no water in the building. WTEC’s faithful employee Cleta, however, suffered 8 feet of water in her home.

    On Sept 21 my daughter Katie and I visited Palmer – Houston, near Katie’s apartment where Melanie and I have been staying. Barbara Davis, who was staying with her niece, was also there. After the sermon and before the peace, Fr. Netter invited everyone to come up for anointing. We also sang “More Love To Thee, O Christ,” which was particularly poignant for me, because I recalled reading that it was one of Benjamin Eaton’s favorite hymns (if not the favorite). All in all, it was a very moving worship experience. Fr. Netter told us that he was planning a mission trip to the sister churches in Galveston.
