Post-Hurricane Ike

Trinity Church survived Hurricane Ike.  Paul and Jan Grizzle reported Monday afternoon that there had been up to six or eight inches of water in the nave and the Sealy Altar Window was damaged.

We know that two Trinity Families and one family from Grace Church lost their homes during the storm.

Grace, St. Augustine's, William Temple Center, and St. Vincent's House appear to have had very little damage.

Church Insurance Corporation has dispatched two representatives to the Diocese of Texas and they will arrive tomorrow to work with diocesan staff to assist churches on and off the island that were hurt by the storm.

Our architect, Joe Oppermann, structural engineer Pat Sparks, and stained glass studio head Jim Hauser are preparing to travel to Galveston as soon as possible.

Please use the "Comment" feature below to share information, such as your whereabouts and well being, and questions.  This will help us stay in touch and support one another during this recovery period.

Also, please listen to the advice of public officials and don't return to the island until they tell us it is safe.

Finally, please pray for one another, for those who are working so hard to make it safe for us to return, and for those who are making plans to respond to our needs when we are back on the island.

My heart goes out to Paul and Jan working through this on the island. It is a microcosm of New Orleans all over again. I know what you are going through and my prayers are with you. I pray for the protection of our parish families and hope if you stayed you are comforted by a good God. If you left, praise God, I know it is worrisome but things are bad on the island and you are safe, have faith. Our family is safe in Palestine and I am working emergency shifts in Friendswood (which has it’s own unique set of problems) I am so thankful to God that my family and co-workers are safe.

Keith and I are in Round Rock with our daughter Marian. Our neighbors across the street stayed, and we have talked to them today. Our house got about 2″ of water that receded after about 2 hours. We are grateful to have no more damage than that. We want to come home but are waiting with everyone else. We continue to pray for everyone in Galveston and in the path of Ike. Our prayers are with each of you.
    God’s peace,
    Susette

Chris and I are at Mike’s folks in Sugar Land. Mike is at UTMB, but is joining us this evening. A small amount of water blew into our house, but otherwise it fared well. Our garage, however, is full of muck. We are so thankful to God that we are safe and had so little damage. Our prayers are with all those in our congregation. We are anxiously waiting to be able to see every one at church again.
    Peace.

Mary was in Calif on business during the storm, and I fled to Richmond, TX with our 3 kittens to stay with friends. We have not been back to our home yet. Neighbors report that our house is still standing, but that my car is toast, and our boat washed across the channel to a neighbor’s yard. Our landlord has been completely unresponsive. We plan to clear out of our house and temporarily move to Mary’s condo in Corpus Christi while we sort things out.

Oliver and I are in Austin with T.C and friends and family. Phillip stayed at his dad’s in northwest Houston. They are ok but last I heard as of yesterday they were without power. Some of our friends that are here live in Fish Village and they got three to four feet of water in their house. One of my friend’s husband is on lockdown at UTMB. They are letting him off till Thursday. He was able to go by their house. They have pretty much lost everything as it was only a one story house.
    Everyone is in our prayers.

    *hugs everyone*
Vladimir and I are safe in Oklahoma and Branko is in San Antonio. The house on 41st & T 1/2 fared well, as did a lot of Ft. Crockett area, but heard today that my mother’s home at the end of Tarpon in Bayou Vista is all but gone. I’ve heard that homes on Woodrow and Denver fared well too.
My thoughts and prayers are there in Galveston. I am wishing you all a quick recovery.

Gloria and Lee Ansell are staying near La Grange at Lee’s son Van’s ranch until they are able to return to Galveston. They have heard from Lee’s son Bill that both of their houses on were spared water damage. They are uncertain as to the condition of Gloria’s son Bill’s house at 47th and N 1/2.

I have heard that they have let some back on the island to pick up meds and things of that nature but have not been able to confirm that.
Moody Methodist reportedly had 3 feet of water.

John and I and “Spanky” left Tiki Island Friday morning and are comfortable at a friend’s house near Richmond. We hope to see our house tomorrow 9/17. I’m certain there will be damage to the lower level, but hopeful the upper (living) areas are OK. Stuff is just stuff. It can all be replaced in time. Glenda Willis and her disabled son and nephew are fine in their home in League City. They have a generator to supply necessary life support to her son. The Grizzles have significant damage to the first story of their home and furnishings due to 4′ of water. Jan says it will be an opportunity to remodel her kitchen. God is with us especially during times like these.
