  • A Fruitful Life

    Modern personnel practices in secular business settings emphasize the importance of performance appraisals. Some of that spills over into our perspective on our life as followers of Jesus Christ. That is not necessarily a good thing.

    Business and the economy are concerned with performance and productivity. People are useful as long as they are able to contribute to the bottom line. People easily become cogs in the wheels of commerce.

    Jesus was concerned about fruitfulness. He said, "Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:4-5).

    I recently helped a family say goodbye to a loved one. He was a renowned surgeon, husband, father, and Christian gentleman. During those last minutes of his life, they were not concerned in the least with his performance. They spoke of the wonderful life he lived and the stewardship of his gifts as a physician that allowed him to heal, save lives, give people another chance. "That was why he was put here," they said. He understood that God had made him a physician and guided his hands in God's healing work. He lived a fruitful life.

    Every life he touched made a difference to others. We'll never know how many.  Something The Rev. Robert H. Schuller said came to mind. "Anyone can count the number of seeds in an apple, but only God can count the number of apples in a seed." Fruitful people go around planting seeds. Those seeds germinate, take root, sprout, grow, and produce fruit. And so the process continues from generation to generation.

    Here's a question: When you die, do you want someone to say about you, "He always had good performance appraisals," or do you want it said, "He lived a fruitful life"?

    Do what you have to do to earn a living, keep your job, and provide for your family. Be a top performer. But don't confuse being a cog in the wheel with living a fruitful, abundant, Christian life.

  • A Whole New Mind

    I just returned from St. John’s Hospital where Fr. Frank Johnson, Jan Henderson, and I represented St. John’s Church at a ceremony in which the hospital board recognized the church for founding the hospital in Jackson Hole 100 years ago. It is inspiring to see the first rate medical center that has emerged from that log hospital. It made me think about what lies ahead in the future, for this hospital and for all of us.     On the way out of the hospital, Jan Henderson reminded me of former White House speechwriter and author Daniel H. Pink. Ten years ago, he published a thoughtful and informed commentary on how right brain thinking is superseding left brain thinking as we make the transition from the Information Age and enter the Conceptual Age. The book is called A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, and even though a decade has passed since its publication, I believe it provides an important perspective for us as we look to tomorrow.

    In this new age, high tech is no longer enough. Well-developed high-tech capabilities will have to be supplemented by high-concept and high-touch abilities. Pink contends that in much of the Western World, the demand for left brain directed emphasis is diminished due to three causes: Abundance, Asia, and Automation.

    Abundance - Our left brains have given us an abundance of things and that has lessened their significance. So, we look for those things that stand out. What makes things stand out is often a function of their design, a right brain directed activity. We want not only utility but significance in our stuff. We have a desire for beauty and transcendence.

    Asia – People in other parts of the world are capable of performing left brain directed work at a fraction of the cost. That usually elevates their quality of life but reduces the demand for similar positions here. Pink suggests that we think of the increase in outsourcing of jobs to other countries as an opportunity to develop a new set of aptitudes, using right brain directed abilities “such as forging relationships rather than executing transactions, tackling novel challenges instead of solving routine problems, and synthesizing the big picture rather than analyzing a single component."

    Automation – Many heavily left brain directed professions and pursuits can now be done by machines. However, machines have not yet been able to accomplish what our right brains do. So, software can now write software that was formerly written by human programmers, leaving them free to devote more attention to creativity, tacit knowledge, and the big picture. 

    Much of medical diagnosis can be guided by computers that process the binary logic of decision trees used by physicians, moving this profession more toward empathy, narrative medicine, and holistic care. 

    In the Conceptual Age, we will need to complement our left brain reasoning by mastering six essential right brain aptitudes. “Together these six high-concept, high-touch senses can help develop the whole new mind this new era demands.”

    1. Not just function but also DESIGN.
    2. Not just argument but also STORY.
    3. Not just focus but also SYMPHONY.
    4. Not just logic but also EMPATHY.
    5. Not just seriousness but also PLAY.
    6. Not just accumulation but also MEANING.

    Of special interest to many of us is the author’s treatment of meaning. He stresses the importance of taking spirituality seriously. "At the very least," he writes, "we ought to take spirituality seriously because of its demonstrated ability to improve our lives – something that might be even more valuable when so many of us have satisfied (and over satisfied) our material needs." 

    A Whole New Mind offers a positive look at a future that has already dawned and leads us to a new way of thinking about what we'll need in order to thrive in it. There are significant implications for those in positions of religious leadership as we consider how to chart a course for the future and reinvent the way we go about being the Church.

    I invite you to think and pray about this during our time of transition as you envision entering a new era of mission with your next Rector. Get involved, build relationships, share your spirit, and receive what others have to offer.

  • Every member has a ministry!

    The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Jesus as the Messiah to the gentile world. In the season following the feast, we are reminded of various ways he manifested his messianic role – miracles, healing, preaching, teaching, and calling people to follow him. Jesus_calls_01

    He spent time with those who responded to his call, forming them into a community and equipping them to continue his messianic work in the world. Each follower of Jesus was given gifts for this work. Some were placed in positions of leadership to provide the formative experiences for others in the generations that followed. In this way, the community of followers of Jesus, the Church, was strategically ordered to advance his mission from generation to generation.

    Writing to the followers of Jesus in the city of Ephesus in the first few years after Jesus ascended into heaven, St. Paul wrote of this way of ensuring the future of Christian mission:

    But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ (Ephesians 4:7, 11-13).

    Notice that the “work of ministry” is entrusted to “the saints.” Who are the saints? The saints are the members of Christ’s Church, the followers of Jesus. Our Episcopal catechism expresses it this way, “The Church carries out its mission through the ministry of all its members” (BCP, p. 855).

    Larger congregations, like ours, have several members of the clergy and a number of staff members. It is easy to see the clergy and staff as the ones who carry out the Church’s mission. Sometimes even the clergy and staff begin to see it that way. However, when that happens, the saints are deprived of their missional opportunities. It is not the job of the clergy and staff to do the work of ministry for the saints. Our vocation and our ministry is to “equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Under the leadership of our Bishop, clergy and staff strategically order the life of the community of faith, recruit, teach, train, equip, empower, and nurture the members in their ministries. It is our responsibility to help each member discover his or her gifts and discern ways in which Christ wants those gifts to be used his ongoing mission.

    Some of the members are called to serve primarily within the life of the Church. Others are called to ministries out in the world at our doorstep. Many are called to do both! Christ calls each of us to be engaged in his mission. Every member has a ministry! Vibrant, fruitful churches are filled with people who believe that and exercise their ministries to the glory of God, thereby building up the Church in pursuit of Christ’s mission.

    So, during this season when we recall those whom Christ called to follow him during his earthly ministry, we reclaim and reaffirm our own vocations. Where are you called to serve Christ in his Church? If you know, your clergy and staff are here to assist you and support you. And, if you are not sure, we are here to help you find a ministry that is right for you.

    There is a long list of possibilities in a brochure we have placed in various locations around the campus. It is also HERE on our website. I invite you, in the name of Jesus Christ, to take some time to review the opportunities and respond to the call to serve in one or more ways. There are places of service every week and places of service that may last for months. Some service requires little preparation and some requires more. A number of roles are for leading others and many are for following. All are important to our life together and to Christ’s mission in the world.

    By responding to your vocation, you give us the privilege of fulfilling ours! Please let us hear from you.

  • Three Primary Ways Christians Share Their Treasure

    When I was called to be your Interim Rector, I was asked to assist the Endowment Committee of St. John’s Church in developing a program to increase the assets of the endowment. I have an interest in seeing parishes ensure the future sustainability of their missions and I also have some experience in developing church endowments. Our committee, with the assistance of the Vestry and Staff, has been putting several elements in place that are necessary for development of this type of giving: an annual professional audit, a gift acceptance policy, concise descriptions of endowment funds, a legacy society, and a list of ways to give to the endowment.

    Next week, members of St. John’s will receive an invitation to consider including the endowment in their estate planning. Some may think this comes too soon on the heels of our annual stewardship campaign or have concerns that the church asks for money too often. Those are understandable concerns but there is more to this invitation than that.

    The Endowment Committee believes that the momentum for the endowment that has been building should continue during the transition period while I am able to be of assistance. Even more importantly, there is no reason for an appeal on behalf of the endowment to be seen as competing with our ordinary sustaining stewardship because it is a different type of giving. Permit me to explain.

    When thinking about giving to Christ and his Church, there are three fairly distinct purses from which Christians share their treasure:

    • Stewardship of Current Income – The ordinary day-to-day ministry of the church is sustained by gifts from our current income.
    • Stewardship of Accumulated Treasure – Special projects, capital campaigns, emergency appeals, and extraordinary projects are mainly furthered by gifts from treasure that has accumulated over time (savings).
    • Stewardship of Residual Treasure – We extend our giving beyond our lifetime through legacy stewardship of retirement savings in the form of bequests from funds, properties, and insurance we will no longer need after we are gone. FINAL Heritage Circle Logo_color

    The Endowment Committee is inviting us to participate in the endowment by looking to the future and including St. John’s – beyond our lifetime, just as we might include members of our family, our alma mater, or some other cause that is dear to our hearts.

    The central message is that we are privileged to be stewards of all of it! Whether spent, saved, or given away, every penny is a sacred trust from God. How can God’s mission at St. John’s be strengthened by the treasure we leave when we no longer need it?

    It is exciting to think what can be accomplished by St. John’s if the ongoing mission of the parish is sustained by members giving generously from their current income so that extra sources of income, such as the endowment, can be used for extraordinary purposes. I hope that when the letter from these members of your church family arrives in your mailbox you will read it with an open mind and give the invitation prayerful consideration.

  • God’s Abundant Protection

    On a visit to England's Salisbury Cathedral, Gay and I were invited to join a tour of what I would have called "the attic," but the English refer to the entire structure as "the roof." Once we had climbed to the top of the interior of the Cathedral, we ascended stairs to the area above the nave that is normally invisible to worshipers beneath the magnificent 757-year-old vaulted Gothic ceiling.

Whereas the ceiling one sees below is beautifully formed and painted, the timbers above, which support tons of lead sheeting, are rustic. Our guide pointed out a place on one of the ancient timbers where the carpenter had placed his mark. It occurred to me that the memorial of this humble craftsman also stood in contrast to the gilded memorials of powerful and influential people down below in the statuary, the windows, the textiles, and all the other treasures that are a part of the day-to-day life of the Cathedral.

    And yet, this sturdy structure provides a cover of protection for everything and everyone below it. Without the roof, exposure to the elements would destroy everything else. The vaulted ceiling of the Cathedral is supposed to draw the minds of worshipers to heaven above, which, like the roof timbers, we cannot see but we trust as the realm of our ultimate protection.

    Salisbury Cathedral has been a place of pilgrimage for countless pilgrims since the mid 13th Century. Like pilgrims going up to the Jerusalem Temple, latter day pilgrims recite prayers and psalms on their journey.  When I was looking at the roof of Salisbury Cathedral that day, the words of Psalm 121 came to mind.

    I lift up my eyes to the hills;
       from where is my help to come?

    My help comes from the LORD,
       the maker of heaven and earth.

    He will not let your foot be moved

    Is it any wonder that the roof-peak on a building became a symbol for Sheild with Chevronprotection? The roof-peak is the inspiration for the ancient symbol we call a “chevron.” The French word chevron means rafter, the sloping supporting beam that runs from the ridge beam of a roof to its edge. In feudal times during the Middle Ages (ca. 1066 to 1485) knights and men-at-arms received the “top of the house” chevron badge or shield as an emblem of their protective role.

    We see this symbol almost every day but never give it a thought. The classic upside down V-shaped symbol, especially used as a symbol of rank on military or police uniforms, is also used as a car logo, a corporation name, a kind of car racing, and more.

    The chevron appears in the new insignia of St. John’s Heritage Circle as an element in the graphic device. It reminds us of the roof of St. John’s and all the chapels of the parish, which are topped by a cross. Like Salisbury Cathedral and other houses of worship, the lines of the architecture are intended to lift our hearts and minds heavenward and point us to God, who is our protector.

    This generation has been entrusted with the work that was begun here decades ago.  It is now our privilege and duty to exercise our trust in God, who “is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work” (2 Cor. 9:8). God's continuing purpose for St. John’s compels us to return week by week to be nourished in Word and Sacrament and sent back into the mission field at our doorstep to love God and our neighbor in our daily lives.

    Sometimes, carrying out God's purpose is challenging and frightening. Some of the neighbors we are commanded to love are not that lovable. Some of the places we are sent are not that safe. Some of the issues we must tackle are not that popular. The price we pay will sometimes be costly. Jesus never promised following him would be risk-free. He said, “Take up your cross and follow me.”  He also promised to provide all the grace, all the resources, and all the protection we need to continue his redemptive work.

    If we will train our eyes to look, we will recognize signs of God's protection wherever we may be.

    You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
       who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,

    will say to the Lord, "My refuge and my fortress;
       my God, in whom I trust."     (Psalm 91:1, 2)

    01_stjohns_episcopal_churchThe Catechism of the Episcopal Church, found on pages 845-862 of The Book of Common Prayer, provides An Outline of the Faith we profess. In the Catechism, we are taught, “The duty of all Christians is to follow Christ; to come together week by week for corporate worship; and to work, pray, and give for the spread of the kingdom of God.” I am grateful to be among people who are called, commissioned, and committed to that way of life. I am grateful to know that the One who gives that life to me is watching over me. I am grateful that God trusts me to extend the good news of divine protection to others who need it. I am grateful. Because I have received so much, I want my gratitude to be reflected in the St John's Roofgenerosity of my life.

    The next time you see the chevron in the insignia of St. John’s Heritage Circle and the next time you look up to our roof or our intricate ceiling structure, think of God our Protector, who is the Source of all our gifts. Know that you are carved into the palm of God's hand and God will never let you go. Trust that God will supply you with exactly enough so that you can give a little more generously every day. Then, with a glad and generous heart, take the steps God sets before you to fulfill your vocation as a follower of Jesus Christ.

  • The Heart of the Matter

    In the last several reflections, I have explored various aspects of Christian stewardship. I would like to think that any one of them might inspire you to place more emphasis on the spiritual vocation and practice of Christian stewardship in your life. Now, in summary, here’s the heart of the matter.

    We need to give.

    God is frequently referred to as “the giver.” For example, we pray to God, the “giver of every perfect gift,” “giver of life,” and “giver of pardon.” The favorite of all Christian Bible verses is “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16). God is the Supreme Giver and we, who are created in God’s likeness, are endowed with a godlike and uniquely human capacity to be givers. We need to give!

    Our gift to God establishes a pattern that sanctifies what we do with the remainder. One of the offerings in ancient Judaism was the offering of First Fruits. The first portion of the harvest, “first fruits,” was offered to God. (Leviticus 23:10) “Honor the Lord with your wealth, the first fruits of all your increase” (Proverbs 3:9) And St. Paul wrote, “If the part of the dough offered as first fruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy” (Romans 11:16). So when we give God the first portion of what God has given to us, it has a way of establishing a holy perspective on all our treasure.

    Stewardship is different from fund raising. Fund raising is giving to some cause that we approve of with the expectation that we will get something out of it. Stewardship, on the other hand, emphasizes giving to God because we’ve already received. Fund raising will always be necessary, but Christian communities are built upon the generous stewardship of their members.

    We need to give and we give to God in response to God’s generosity toward us.

    In this and thousands of churches, people are asked not only to practice tithing but also to make a written pledge of financial support. Why is a pledge necessary? Perhaps it should not be necessary. But the fellow parishioners you have entrusted with the governance of the parish do a better job of planning if they have a reliable estimate of the giving of all the members. So, after the pledges are in, they develop a mission plan that seeks to balance the spending with the projected contributions toward God’s ongoing mission.

    After all, God has made countless pledges to us. Have you ever thought about the origin of the word “Sacrament?” It is derived from the Latin word sacramentum, which means a sacred pledge or oath. Christian Sacraments are God’s pledge to us. In Holy Baptism, God pledges to love us for ever. In the Holy Eucharist, God pledges ongoing provisions for the living of the Christian life. We pledge to God in response to God’s pledges to us.

    We are a covenant community. A covenant consists of unbreakable pledges made between two or more parties. Christianity is meant to be lived in such a community. Theologian George Rupp once said, “There is no life without community and there is no community without commitment.” A written pledge to share one’s treasure is an expression of participation in and commitment to the covenant community.

    We make a pledge to God and one another each year as a way of saying, “You can count on me.”

    We are called to put our heart into it.

    Jesus had much to say about the relationship between our treasure and our true priorities in life. For example, he said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Isn’t that the truth? Just look at how spend money on things we really love.

    The spiritual discipline of Christian stewardship helps to prevent us from loving anything so much that God is squeezed out of our lives. Jesus spent so much time preaching and teaching about our relationship with possessions because he wanted to prevent us from a form of slavery in which we are possessed by our possessions. He wanted to help us avoid putting any idol in the place of our Creator. He wanted us to give God our heart and we just can’t do that if our treasure is in the way. When our giving to God is sacrificial enough, we know if our hearts are being drawn from the love of God. LOGO_Heart on Top_Blacktext_Fill_1024

    Some say the heart in the St. John’s insignia symbolizes that St. John’s is the heart of Jackson Hole. That may be true, but other churches and institutions also believe they are the heart of this valley. Some say that the heart signifies St. John’s love for our neighbors. That also may be true. I invite you to consider that it represents the divine call to put our heart into St. John’s and, as the cross inside it suggests, to do it sacrificially. The offering of our treasure will be one of the signs that we mean it.

    “For, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
